Thickeners, also known as rheology modifiers or viscosity modifiers, are functional additives used to adjust the flow and viscosity of liquid systems. They work by building viscosity, controlling rheology, and providing pseudoplastic or thixotropic behavior. Common types include cellulose ethers, alkali-swellable emulsions (ASE), hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsions (HASE), polyurethane associative thickeners (HEUR), inorganic thickeners such as bentonite and fumed silica, and natural gums. Although the dosage is typically only 0.1–3% of the formulation, thickeners play a critical role in storage stability, pigment settling, sag resistance, leveling, film build, and overall application performance in waterborne coatings, adhesives, inks, sealants, and construction materials.
