Chain Extenders are functional compounds used to extend polymer chains and increase molecular weight by reacting with isocyanate-terminated prepolymers or other reactive intermediates. They typically contain two or more active hydrogen groups, such as hydroxyl or amine groups, which react with isocyanates to build hard segments and form three-dimensional networks. Major types include aliphatic diols (e.g., 1,4-butanediol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol), aromatic diamines (e.g., MOCA, DETDA), and aliphatic diamines. Although the dosage varies by application—typically 5–30% in polyurethane elastomers, coatings, and adhesives—chain extenders play a decisive role in mechanical strength, hardness, heat resistance, tear resistance, and dynamic performance of polyurethane and polyurea systems.
